William BELLINGHAM

BIOGRAPHY: apparently he migrated to the Massachusetts Bay Colony as well, where it was recorded that he was involved in a business partnership with his nephew.


Richard BELLINGHAM [Governor]

BIOGRAPHY: Educated as a lawyer. Served as city recorder for Boston, Lincolnshire, England from 1625 to 1633. Emigrated to Massachusetts in the American Colonies in 1634. Elected Deputy Governor of the Massachusetts Bay colony in 1635. Elected Governor in 1644. Re-elected several times including continuously from 1665 to 1672 until his death. He is well known as a character in the now classic novel by Nathaniel Hawthorne, "The Scarlet Letter". He was infamous for creating a legal crisis in 1641 when he married, and in doing so, he performed the ceremony himself. In spite of his eccentricities, he was well respected, even among his opponents for his knowledge of the law. He was also renown for having a sister, Anne (Bellingham) Hibbins who was one of the few people accused and convicted in the Salem Witch Trials, where she was executed by hanging.

Samuel BELLINGHAM

BIOGRAPHY: 'The English Ancestry of Governor William Bellingham" states that he left the American Colonies and returned to London , England and then went to Leyden, Holland to train to be a medical doctor. Apparently he lived out the rest of his days in London, England.
