King's Bench where Richard and Mary were married was a debtor's prison and many destitute vicars and clergymen who found themselves there made a little extra money by performing marriages for couples who did not wish (for whatever reason) to be married in their parish church. Perhaps Richard and Mary had 'eloped' or married against the family's wishes, preferring to present the family with a 'fait accompli'.
